A National Poll Reveals Democratic Desires for Change
A recent CNN/SSRS survey conducted between July 23-27 reveals that Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents want substantial changes in the party’s leadership and strategic direction. However, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s emergence as a unifying national figure faces challenges due to her low favorability ratings.
The poll shows a 26 percent national favorability rating for Ocasio-Cortez, compared to a 36 percent unfavorable rating. Among adults aged 18 to 34, her favorability stands at 28 percent, and rises slightly to 30 percent for those aged 35 to 49.
The survey included 1,225 respondents, with a margin of error of +/-3.2 at the 95 percent confidence level. These findings present a strategic challenge for Democrats as they navigate dissatisfaction with current leadership and Ocasio-Cortez’s lack of broad national appeal.
Progressive Influence and Polarization in Public Standing
About one-third of Democrats identify as democratic socialists, highlighting the significant impact of progressive ideology within the coalition. While many favor a change in leadership and strategy, Ocasio-Cortez’s polarizing public image persists. Despite her large social media following and fundraising strength, her favorability rating of 26 percent is lower than typical ratings for politicians with presidential-level recognition, who usually have positive ratings ranging from 40 to 50 percent.
Potential Democratic Frontrunners for 2028
The Democratic presidential race for 2028 is in its early stages, with no major candidates officially announcing campaigns. Vice President Kamala Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are among those discussed as potential contenders.
Kamala Harris hinted at a possible run for the presidency during a conversation with Reverend Al Sharpton in April, emphasizing her experience close to the presidency. Gavin Newsom acknowledged the possibility in an interview, while Ocasio-Cortez expressed her ambition to transform the country rather than pursue the presidency.
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff has clearly stated he is not planning to run, focusing on his reelection in Georgia.
Strategic Imperatives for Democrats
With the next presidential election years away, Democrats must balance the desire for party reform with the need to find leaders who can unite their diverse electoral base. Party strategists emphasize the importance of selecting standard-bearers who resonate with the restless base demanding changes.
