Democrats Highlight War in Iran as Election Issue in Virginia Rally

Three Democrats from different parts of Virginia campaigned together on Monday, raising the ongoing war in Iran as a significant election issue. This issue extends beyond affecting gasoline prices to have broader implications for military families in the state.

The unpopular war has unsettled oil markets and presented challenges for Republicans during the midterms. Virginia, being a military-dependent state, faces consequences that impact more than finances. Elaine Luria, a former representative, emphasized this at a rally in eastern Henrico County, near Richmond: “This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties.”

Luria faces Rep. Jen Kiggans, also a Navy veteran, in Virginia’s 2nd District, which includes Virginia Beach and several Navy installations. Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor, challenging Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, criticized her opponent’s support of the war. Similarly, Tom Perriello, a former representative now challenging Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, linked his campaign to ending this conflict.

Pete Buttigieg, former transportation secretary and a military veteran, attended the rally to support the message. He inspired Virginia Democrats to aim for gaining control of the House, needing a net gain of four seats to secure a majority. “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” Buttigieg told an audience exceeding 200 people.
