Denmark Stands Firm on Greenland’s Sovereignty Amid U.S. Remarks

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark reiterated the nation’s commitment to defending its territory, including Greenland, following President Trump’s comments suggesting U.S. control over the island. Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland is not for sale and highlighted Denmark’s readiness to protect every inch of NATO territory.

Frederiksen responded to Trump’s assertions by stating, ‘We will defend the kingdom of Denmark,’ and clarified that their defense includes the semi-autonomous territory of Greenland. She insisted that Denmark is prepared to defend its sovereignty and territory as a member of NATO.

President Trump expressed his frustration with the current status of Greenland within NATO, calling it a significant issue for the United States. He argued that U.S. control of Greenland would serve global protection needs, not Denmark’s interests. Earlier in the year, Trump hinted at potential military solutions to gain control of Greenland, which prompted Denmark to devise defensive strategies, including measures to thwart an American invasion.

In recent developments, the U.S. has shifted its approach, opting for negotiations. Washington seeks increased influence by aiming for access to additional military bases in Denmark and a more significant presence in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. The pursuit includes discussions about major investment decisions and a larger consulate facility.

Denmark and Greenland have strengthened their unity in response to American proposals, striving to maintain their territorial integrity. Frederiksen reinforced the importance of NATO’s Article 5, which guarantees collective defense among member nations. The European Union has openly supported Denmark and Greenland, affirming that decisions regarding Greenland’s future rest with Greenlanders and Danes.

Olof Gill from the European Commission emphasized the fundamental principles of international law, including territorial integrity and national sovereignty, underscoring the bloc’s support for Denmark’s stance.
