Australia Reports 34 Missing Citizens
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the absence of at least 34 Australians following a catastrophic flood. Information access is restricted due to the enormity of the disaster. The individuals were part of pilgrimage and tour groups. Australia has initiated a crisis response by sending experts to the area.
The loss and destruction are overwhelming, said Wong at a news conference.
American Tourists Also Affected
Sunil Sharma of Nepal’s tourism board confirmed that 47 American tourists are missing. The U.S. State Department is yet to verify these numbers but is actively monitoring the crisis. A disaster response adviser has been sent to aid efforts. In addition, $500,000 has been allocated through Catholic Relief Services to support affected communities.
Impact on Foreign Nationals
Over 400 foreign nationals remain unaccounted for in a region frequented by pilgrims and trekkers. Countries with reported missing citizens include India, Canada, Britain, Australia, Japan, and Malaysia.
Widespread Destruction Documented
Officials in Nepal report significant devastation along the country’s border with China. Videos verified by NBC News depict collapsing bridges and buildings as floodwaters, filled with mud and debris, rage through the Rasuwa region. The once tranquil, verdant valleys have been instantaneously transformed by the violent torrents of water.
Footage from the Rasuwagadhi border crossing shows the overwhelming power of the floods, which have turned mountain towns and villages to ruins.
A video recorded on a bus in Bidur shows the chaos as a mud surge appears, prompting people to flee and vehicles to maneuver hastily for safety. Additional footage shared by Nepali police illustrates the total devastation, with roads and buildings eradicated completely.
