Guillaume Bos shared his experience of witnessing a devastating fire engulf his village in the Gironde region, the most severely affected area by the wildfires in southwestern France. He noted that around his home, the landscape is completely scorched.
Mr. Bos, a 36-year-old business manager and forest owner residing in Le Temple, described the situation as a true disaster. Le Temple, a village with about 600 residents located approximately 18 miles west of Bordeaux, has been battling these fires for several days. Unusually hot and dry weather conditions have fueled the flames, challenging firefighters trying to contain them.
On Friday afternoon, Mr. Bos received an evacuation order but decided to stay. He joined other forest owners and farmers to combat the fire, while his wife and son evacuated to safety.
“It’s difficult when your family leaves, and you’re uncertain about the outcome,” he stated.
Using tractors and trailers equipped with water tanks, Mr. Bos and his friends worked to save most of the village’s houses. Despite their efforts, around six houses were destroyed. The majority of the surrounding pine forest also succumbed to the flames. Although the immediate threat has passed, Mr. Bos mentioned that they continue to spray water around Le Temple to prevent the fire from reigniting.
