Over the past weekend, Senator Rand Paul released a series of diary entries by Dr. Fauci, compiled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 1,141-page document became unavailable on Monday following its release. This occurred just before Fauci’s upcoming testimony before a Senate committee. The diary entries, alongside Paul’s remarks, accentuate discrepancies between Fauci and some politicians regarding the origins of COVID-19.
Senator Paul and Dr. Fauci have publicly sparred over the pandemic’s origins. Paul continued to investigate the origins and the issue of taxpayer-funded life sciences research even after Fauci left the NIAID at the end of 2022. On Saturday, Paul shared a thread on the platform X, referring to what he described as Fauci’s diary entries from December 2019 to December 2022. commenting, “What [Fauci] wrote privately and what he told the country are two different stories.” Fauci and Paul did not reply to NPR’s request for comments before publishing.
Disagreements Over Virus Origins
Dr. Fauci supports the theory that the coronavirus emerged from a spillover event, starting with an animal-to-human transmission that led to the pandemic. Several scientists, including virologist Felicia Goodrum, trace the virus to the Wuhan wet market. Genetic data has linked initial cases to that market rather than the Wuhan Institute of Virology. A survey by the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute in February 2024 found most scientists favoring this view.
Conversely, Senator Paul advocates for investigating whether the virus was engineered in a laboratory. The Republican-led Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic concluded in 2024 that a lab leak might explain the virus’s origin, suggesting NIH funds could have facilitated viral research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
However, Robert Garry, a virologist at Tulane University, disputes this, citing a lack of evidence. He claims no existing virus matched SARS-CoV-2 close enough to suggest it originated in a lab.
Insights from Fauci’s Diary
Paul shared excerpts from Fauci’s diary entries. On January 26, 2020, Fauci noted that early infections were unconnected to the market but mentioned the virus’s animal-to-human transmission. On February 1, 2020, Fauci documented a call where most researchers considered a lab origin plausible. Paul suggests this indicates early doubts about a natural origin.
Goodrum argues initial uncertainties reflected the early stages of scientific understanding. As more data surfaced, the scientific consensus evolved, supporting an animal origin over a lab leak.
Upcoming Senate Testimony
Fauci’s upcoming testimony before Senator Paul’s committee will likely delve into these issues. Paul may press Fauci on his diary entries and address points underscored in his X thread.
Previously, Fauci has dismissed unsubstantiated claims about the pandemic’s origins. In an August 24, 2021, diary entry, he described conspiracy theories as a waste of time.
Paul maintains his view that this scrutiny represents necessary “oversight.”
