Tampa Bay Buccaneers nose tackle Vita Vea has asked to be traded, choosing the day before training camp to make his request. This move highlights his frustration with contract negotiations during the offseason. A source confirmed this to Fox News Digital.
Although Vea wants a trade, this does not guarantee it will occur. He is under contract until 2026, with potential earnings of up to $18 million if he completes the season.
Vea’s desire for more money stems from being ranked as the 19th-highest-paid interior defensive lineman, a status he feels is below his performance level.
Vea is essential to the Bucs’ defense, known for his run-stopping abilities.
With a rare blend of size and strength, he effectively anchors the defensive line. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 347 pounds, Vea handles double-teams and disrupts rushing lanes, crucial for Tampa Bay’s defense.
Since Vea became a starter in 2019, Tampa Bay has excelled defensively against the run. From 2019 to most of 2024, they led the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed per game. Their defense ranked in the top five against the run in five out of six seasons, securing the top spot in 2019 and 2020.
Vea faced a setback in 2020, missing most of the season due to injury. Yet, over the past five years, he started 78 games, proving his durability and skill.
In 2024, Vea recorded a career-high of seven sacks, demonstrating his versatility beyond run defense. His efforts, alongside teammate Calijah Kancey, made Tampa Bay one of three teams with two defensive tackles achieving seven sacks that season.
