During a recent appearance on ‘My View with Lara Trump,’ James Percival, the general counsel for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), issued a warning to noncitizens about the consequences of voting illegally. He stated that federal authorities are committed to tracking down, charging, and deporting anyone who casts an illegal vote. This warning comes as the country prepares for Tuesday’s midterm elections.
“Our message now is, whether it’s now or later, if you illegally cast a vote, we will find you, we will charge you, and we will deport you,” Percival stressed.
The DHS has instructed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport undocumented immigrants found voting in American elections. This announcement follows a DHS press release regarding dozens of arrests in a nationwide voter fraud crackdown. According to Secretary Markwayne Mullin, some arrested individuals have criminal backgrounds, including offenses like assault, drug trafficking, and DUI. Mullin emphasized that American elections are reserved for American citizens.
The Trump administration’s initiative to identify noncitizen voters has faced resistance from several state election officials. For instance, Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs criticized the Justice Department’s recent findings. Federal investigators claimed to have identified over 400 noncitizens illegally registered to vote in Washington state, with some having cast votes in multiple elections over the years.
“This list includes United States citizens and is not reliable,” Hobbs argued. “Without individualized proof of ineligibility, it would be both irresponsible and illegal for election officials to decline to process a registered voter’s ballot.”
Hobbs further added that many individuals on the list are not currently registered to vote or have inactive status, contrary to federal claims.
In connection with these efforts, Percival confirmed that more than 200 individuals have been charged with noncitizen voter fraud, with more cases expected in the future.
