Doctors across the U.S. are grappling with a shortage of vital generic chemotherapy drugs. Many are worried that this shortage may result in widespread rationing.
The shortages are attributed to manufacturing difficulties, transport delays, and some companies ceasing production as noted by the Food and Drug Administration. These longstanding medicines are tough to produce in sterile conditions and fetch low prices domestically. Despite this, they are highly effective against certain cancers, including those affecting the breast, lungs, and head and neck, which lack targeted treatments.
One specific drug, ifosfamide, used for sarcomas, lymphomas, and testicular cancers, is already limited. Doctors are meeting to determine which patients will receive treatment.
Dr. Andrew Shuman, a cancer surgeon specializing in head and neck cases and a University of Michigan professor, has highlighted the dire situation. Some families face painful decisions as the drug shortage means their loved ones may miss out on the best possible treatment.
In Michigan, where Dr. Shuman operates, some doctors are rationing treatments for patients with the highest likelihood of positive outcomes. This prioritization tends to favor younger patients who have a chance of full recovery.
