DOJ Probes Michigan Voter Fraud and Maryland Ballot Issues

The Department of Justice is conducting an investigation into voter fraud in Wayne County, Michigan. U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon, highlighted instances of fraudulent voting and the lack of compliance with the Help America Vote Act.

In Maryland, a recent primary ballot error has prompted renewed Republican calls for a federal examination of the state’s voter rolls. Some mail-in ballots sent to 400,000 voters were erroneous, leading to requests for a review.

The Maryland Freedom Caucus demands that the state’s Election Board release voter rolls for federal auditing. A statement from the caucus warns against mailing another set of 400,000 ballots without a clear method to differentiate between the first and second editions. The caucus emphasizes the need to ensure each person votes only once.

Sample ballots from countries like North Macedonia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia adorn the office of Jared DeMarinis, Maryland’s elections administrator. This mix-up, according to the caucus, reflects poorly on the Democratic State Board of Elections, accusing them of facilitating voter suppression.

Maryland plans to resend corrected ballots following the initial error, which had the potential to invalidate some mail-in votes. DeMarinis confirmed that the state is committed to addressing concerns over mail voting integrity, ensuring transparency throughout the process.

The vendor responsible for the error, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions (TPVI), Inc., acknowledged the mistake and apologized. They promised to mail corrected ballots by May 29, 2026, instructing voters to dispose of the original ballots securely to prevent duplicate voting. Election safeguards are in place to ensure only corrected ballots are valid.

Errors occurred with ballots requested and mailed before May 14, affecting those mailed ballots rather than web-delivered ones. The situation heightens Republican scrutiny in Maryland, following prior RNC actions against perceived inadequate voter roll maintenance.

The RNC has sued Maryland for not properly managing voter rolls, citing registration figures they find unrealistic. The committee insists Maryland must adhere to federal standards requiring voter roll updates and public inspection rights.

The complaint mentions counties with registered voters exceeding adult residents and others with unusually high registration percentages. The RNC argues that this contradicts federal transparency requirements and mirrors action taken in Hawaii and New Jersey.
