In South Bend, Indiana, Notre Dame’s dominance was evident from the first play against Stanford. Irish defensive end Boubacar Traore charged unblocked and brought down quarterback Davis Warren. Notre Dame linebacker Jaiden Ausberry quickly recovered the fumble at Stanford’s 18-yard line. Four plays later, Nolan James Jr. scored a 2-yard touchdown, setting an early lead for the Irish.
The ease with which Notre Dame played continued throughout the game. By halftime, they led by 37 points, ultimately securing a 58-7 victory. This game marked Notre Dame’s 26th win in the Legends Trophy rivalry, improving to 4-1 under coach Marcus Freeman. The game featured other remarkable plays; Jonaz Walton’s 97-yard touchdown run and Traore’s interception were among the highlights.
Notre Dame, now 6-0, was expected to perform well against the 2-4 Stanford. Previous matches had similar outcomes, with Notre Dame winning against Wisconsin, Rice, Michigan State, Purdue, and North Carolina fairly comfortably.
As Freeman noted, the team looks forward to more challenging games in the College Football Playoff race. Notre Dame faces No. 8 BYU next, part of a tough schedule with upcoming matches against ranked teams like Miami and SMU.
“They’re ultimate competitors, and they want to play the best,” Freeman said of his team after the Stanford game.
Looking forward, Freeman emphasized enjoying victories before preparing for the next challenges. BYU enters the match with a strong 5-0 record. Miami and SMU also present significant tests in the coming weeks.
During the Stanford game, quarterback CJ Carr completed 14 of 20 passes, totaling 181 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Jonaz Walton also impressed, surpassing Notre Dame’s true freshman rushing record with 181 yards and two touchdowns. His performance, including a 97-yard touchdown, highlighted his potential.
The Notre Dame defense was missing key players like linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa and cornerback Leonard Moore, yet showed resilience. Safety Brauntae Johnson was also absent due to injury. Despite these setbacks, the team’s depth proved crucial.
Freeman emphasized the importance of depth, stating, “It’s crucial at every position … It’s a comforting feeling for a coach.” This depth allows Notre Dame to confidently face their upcoming challenging opponents as they aim for playoff contention.
