Struggles in Denver

Initially excited to join the Broncos under a three-year contract worth $31.5 million, Greenlaw’s tenure in Denver was marked by challenges. He faced difficulties with the altitude and climate, which impacted his comfort and performance. “F—ing altitude,” Greenlaw remarked to The Athletic. “My mouth’s dry, my nose is dry, I can’t sleep.” His experience in California starkly contrasts this. “This fresh air, bro, it makes a difference,” he said, emphasizing the improvement in his training environment.

Injuries and Setbacks

The start with the Broncos was overshadowed by a severe quadriceps strain suffered on the second day of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), delaying his play until Week 7. This injury, along with subsequent setbacks including a hamstring issue, affected the linebacker’s relationship with head coach Sean Payton. “When we played the Jaguars… I had a little bit of a hamstring [injury]. After that, you kind of feel when the coach is, like, not really messing with you. I felt alone,” recalled Greenlaw.

Adaptation Challenges

Adjusting to a new defensive scheme proved difficult for Greenlaw, who felt more familiar with the 49ers’ approach. “I don’t blame anything on the Broncos… Coming off the Achilles and the calf [injuries], I just wasn’t in the shape that I needed,” Greenlaw admitted, recognizing the pressures following his big-contract signing affected his decision-making.

Returning to the 49ers

After being cut by the Broncos, Greenlaw signed with the 49ers on a one-year, $7.5 million deal. The move allowed him to return to a familiar setting. He expressed contentment with his decision, stating, “It just feels like home.” Greenlaw is focusing on his performance and proving skeptics wrong, something he believes he has been doing all his life.
