The Bundibugyo virus, a less familiar strain of Ebola, previously responsible for only two small outbreaks, is now at the heart of a rapidly expanding epidemic in Africa. The outbreak has taken hold in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, prompting health workers to quickly provide supportive care. They aim for patient recovery while implementing isolation and tracing contacts of the infected to curb the spread.
An alarming gap exists in the fight against this outbreak: the absence of vaccines and drugs capable of stopping the virus. The scale of the epidemic has compelled scientists to intensify their search for solutions. On Monday, two significant nonprofit organizations announced substantial funding to aid vaccine development. Concurrently, the World Health Organization has advocated for testing a few monoclonal antibodies and other potential treatments.
Researchers caution that it will take months to determine the effectiveness of these measures. However, even by then, these treatments may remain crucial, as the outbreak is expected to persist. Richard Hatchett, CEO of CEPI, a nonprofit supporting pandemic countermeasures, emphasized the necessity of a lengthy and committed effort to control the outbreak.
The challenge in combating Ebola disease lies in its diverse viral strains. When scientists speak of the “Ebola virus,” they refer to a 1976-discovered species in what was once Zaire. This diversity complicates efforts to develop a universal response to the disease.
