Embattled LAUSD Superintendent Steps Down Amid Investigation

The superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Alberto Carvalho, resigned after his home and office faced an FBI raid earlier this year. Carvalho, who managed the nation’s second-largest school district, announced his resignation Sunday to prevent distractions from affecting student learning.

Placing students first has always guided my work. Because I believe our schools must remain focused on students and learning without distraction, I am resigning as Superintendent of LAUSD effective today, June 21, 2026.

Carvalho’s resignation follows ongoing inquiries related to a problematic multimillion-dollar AI school contract and potential conflicts of interest.

The FBI conducted raids on Carvalho’s home and office, as well as on a property linked to a friend of his, as part of the investigation. The focus of the inquiry appears to be a failed $6 million AI project awarded to a defunct startup, AllHere, which was involved in creating a student chatbot. The project’s collapse in 2024 followed accusations of embezzlement against the startup’s founder and complaints about data privacy issues.

Carvalho, who was appointed in 2022 and reappointed in 2025, cited several “historic” accomplishments during his term, such as increased graduation rates and progress for disadvantaged students. He expressed gratitude towards students, families, teachers, and the community for their cooperation and support.

The LAUSD Board issued a statement highlighting their dedication to maintaining public trust and ensuring stability in the district. Andres E. Chait will act as the interim superintendent until a permanent replacement is selected.

The LAUSD-related investigation also included searches at the home of Debra Kerr, a friend and longtime associate of Carvalho, who allegedly helped facilitate the AllHere contract. The situation remains under scrutiny as authorities continue their investigation.
