Embrace the Outdoors: The Touch Grass Challenge

Introduction to the Challenge

Welcome to the start of our summer challenge! We’re encouraging you to step outside and disconnect from your devices. Every week in June, we’ll provide an evidence-based exercise aimed at helping you leave behind your screen and reconnect with nature.

Why Consider the Challenge?

Many adults admit to spending excessive time on gadgets. We typically spend around 90% of our lives indoors. Dr. John La Puma, an internist and the author of “Indoor Epidemic,” describes phone time as “ultraprocessed time,” which doesn’t refresh us. Unlike ultraprocessed food, these moments are designed for convenience rather than nourishment.

Spending time outdoors can significantly improve your health. Benefits include reduced stress, improved mood, and enhanced focus. Let’s find ways to reduce screen time and increase outdoor activities.

How to Participate

Start by dedicating at least 20 minutes daily to spending time outdoors throughout June.

A study with nearly 20,000 participants revealed that 120 minutes a week in nature elevated health and well-being levels. That’s approximately 17 minutes a day.

Any nearby green space is suitable. You don’t need a forest to enjoy nature’s benefits.

Practical Steps

1. **Schedule Your Time**: Check your agenda every morning to allocate two 10-minute outdoor periods. Alternatively, find a single 20-minute window.

2. **Notice Nature**: If urban areas surround you, look for natural elements like trees or plants emerging from unlikely spots, such as sidewalks.

3. **Evaluate Phone Usage**: Consider the time spent on your phone. You might be shocked at the hours. Get instructions for checking on both iPhone and Android.

4. **Leave Your Phone Behind**: Whenever possible, explore green spaces without your phone to maximize the health benefits. If you must bring it, try keeping it off.

Enjoy the Nature Experience

Going outside can offer a refreshing mental reset, says Marc Berman, an environmental neuroscientist. Nature provides a “soft fascination,” which gently draws in your attention.

Although leaving your phone behind may feel unsettling initially, Dr. Berman suggests you might enjoy the experience more than anticipated.

Explore with your senses fully engaged. Feel the breeze, observe the clouds, and enjoy the surroundings.

Progress Through the Month

Continue this practice throughout June. Notice changes in your mental and physical state. Are you less anxious? Do you feel more energized?

Share how this experience impacts you in the comments. It’s nearly summer; enjoy the season by disconnecting from your screen and enjoying the great outdoors!
