Emergency services were deployed to an incident close to RAF Fairford in Whelford, England, on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Authorities evacuated nearby homes, arresting several men in relation to suspected explosives offenses. Gloucestershire police confirmed the evacuation of residents from ‘a number of properties’ with relocation to a nearby leisure center, stating the situation is ‘contained.’
Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation, a standard procedure in such situations. RAF Fairford, located near Whelford, serves as a base for the U.S. military and is used for limited strikes, including recent actions during the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Following the conflict’s onset on February 28, the U.K. government permitted U.S. military operations from Fairford to target Iranian missile sites. Gloucestershire police reported several men detained under suspicion of violating the Explosives Act. Army bomb-disposal experts are currently assessing multiple vehicles. However, police have not confirmed any direct connection between the arrests and the base.
The police assured, ‘A cordon is currently in place, but we’d like to reassure people that we believe this incident is contained.’
Defense Secretary Wes Streeting praised the emergency and specialist teams addressing the situation. ‘We can be reassured that this is being dealt with,’ Streeting stated. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is receiving ongoing updates, according to his office.
A U.S. Air Force spokesperson at RAF Fairford emphasized personnel vigilance without detailing specific security measures. The spokesperson mentioned, ‘We constantly assess a variety of factors that determine what measures we institute or modify to protect our installations, our people, and their families.’
