The Miami-Dade School Board, alongside the State of Florida, has implemented a requirement for electrocardiograms (ECGs) for all student-athletes before they engage in sports. Known as the ‘Second Chance Act,’ this measure aims to prevent tragic incidents during athletic activities.
The Significance of ECGs
Participating in high school sports offers numerous educational benefits such as learning teamwork and discipline. However, with the risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), heart screenings become crucial. Over 90% of SCA victims do not survive and often are unaware of their risk prior to an event.
Steps to Get Your Child Screened
Florida’s sports medicine community takes an active role in ensuring athlete safety. This involves training coaches in CPR and equipping schools with automated external defibrillators (AEDs). A key component is the ECG, which is a quick and non-invasive test assessing heart electrical activity. It’s done alongside a health questionnaire and physical exam for comprehensive safety checks.
Many healthcare providers in Florida, such as Baptist Health and Nicklaus Children’s, offer these screenings at low or no cost. By law, the cost must not exceed $50, ensuring affordability. While no test is foolproof, early screening can identify potential issues, though some cases might be false alarms.
Early detection allows for necessary follow-up, when required, giving all student-athletes the best chance to participate in sports safely. Dr. Michael Swartzon, from Baptist Health South Florida, emphasizes the importance of such protections, working with professional teams like the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers to uphold these standards.
