ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith expressed concerns about the impact of far-left streamer Hasan Piker on the Democratic Party. He shared these views with POLITICO host Dasha Burns during “The Conversation with Dasha Burns.” Smith believes Piker’s growing influence extends beyond the progressive base, potentially affecting Democrats negatively in general elections.
Smith stated, “It’s a negative because I think over the long haul from a general populist perspective, it’s going to contaminate the electorate on the left side of the aisle.” This perspective suggests Republicans could use Piker’s association with Democratic candidates as political ammunition.
Smith warned, “Hasan Piker’s growing influence could ‘contaminate’ Democrats and ‘come back to haunt them.'”
The Republican National Committee (RNC) has already highlighted Piker’s ties with Democratic candidates like Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Natalie Baldassarre, RNC’s national press secretary, criticized Democrats for not distancing themselves from Piker. She accused El-Sayed of associating with “Hamas-hugging radicals” like Piker, labeling him a “terrorist sympathizer and an America-hating socialist.” The RNC argues this reflects poorly on the Democratic Party.
In Michigan’s crucial Senate race, Piker’s involvement has become a contentious issue. Fox News polling indicates Republican Mike Rogers leading El-Sayed 51%-47% within the margin of error. Support among Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) supporters for El-Sayed stands at 98%, but only 69% among non-DSA Democrats and independents back him.
El-Sayed has defended engaging Piker’s audience, arguing, “There are three million people who listen to Hasan.” He sees it as an opportunity to draw them into an electoral movement despite disagreements with some of Piker’s views.
Smith emphasized that El-Sayed’s strategy aims to win Piker’s audience rather than endorse the streamer.
El-Sayed concurred, stating, “You’re not thinking about him. You’re thinking about the three million people that support him, and you’re trying to get those votes.” However, he faced backlash for associating with Piker, particularly after controversial comments regarding American Jews and Israel.
Piker has a history of contentious statements, including a 2019 comment about 9/11, which he later retracted. Recent remarks about Israel and American Jews have also stirred controversy. El-Sayed has since sought to distance his campaign from Piker.
Fox News Digital reached out to Piker, the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and the RNC for comment but received no immediate response.
