Arizona murder suspect Varun Batchigari has been arrested in Germany and faces extradition to the United States. He is accused in the killing of his girlfriend, Julissa Salazar. Former DOJ prosecutor Jim Trusty highlights the legal challenges in extraditing Batchigari.
FBI Director Kash Patel has significantly enhanced cooperation with international partners to extradite fugitives. Data from the FBI shows that Patel made 100 international calls in his first 18 months, compared to nine calls made by his predecessor in the last 18 months of the Biden administration.
Extraditions increased by 65%, and Foreign Transfer of Custody (FTOC) operations, where suspects are apprehended overseas and transferred to U.S. custody, rose by 54%. The FBI reported 157 extraditions and 86 FTOCs during this period.
“When I became FBI director, I made it clear that our focus would be on bringing back high-value targets from abroad. We’ve achieved this due to cooperation with foreign governments,” Patel said.
Recently, Alexis Flores, a former top-ten FBI fugitive, was extradited from Honduras to Philadelphia. Flores was wanted for a 2000 murder of a girl in Philadelphia. Another notable extradition involved Zobaidul Amin, a Bangladeshi national, involved in online child exploitation. He was extradited from Malaysia.
The FBI, under Patel’s leadership, emphasizes the extradition of fugitives worldwide. Patel’s efforts resulted in a 400% increase in calls to foreign partners compared to previous FBI Director Christopher Wray’s tenure.
Typically, the FBI collaborates with international authorities to locate and arrest suspects overseas. The Justice Department then requests extradition based on treaties with those countries. Once approved, FBI agents assume custody and return the suspect to the U.S. for trial.
