Establishment Democrat Wesley Bell Defeats Cori Bush for the Second Time

Establishment Democrats celebrated a significant win in their internal conflict with the insurgent left as former House member Cori Bush’s return attempt was blocked. Representative Wesley Bell of Missouri defeated Bush, a Democratic Socialists of America member, marking his second win over her since 2024.

Bell positioned himself as a pragmatic alternative while maintaining progressive appeal within Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. Before serving in Congress, Bell held positions as a Ferguson City Council member and county prosecutor.

Cori Bush, known for her activism as a Black Lives Matter organizer, served two congressional terms before initially losing to Bell. In her 2024 defeat, she cited substantial financial support for Bell’s campaign from pro-Israel groups outside her district as a critical factor.

“When the disaster caused $1.6 billion in damages and took several lives, Wesley responded by hopping on a flight to Israel funded by Trump’s donors less than 90 days later,” Bush shared on X, referring to a 2025 tornado in St. Louis.

Despite attacking Bell for his association with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Bush’s efforts were insufficient to damage his campaign significantly.

Critics within the Democratic Party, including Republicans, claim that such progressive challenges suggest the party is veering too far left, distancing itself from mainstream American sentiments. Bell’s victory underscores his strong position ahead of the November election in the predominantly Democratic district.
