Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State, has clinched the Democratic nomination for governor. She won against Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the primary, according to the Associated Press. Benson’s political journey includes two terms as Secretary of State, having been first elected in 2018. She gained national prominence in 2020 by defending Michigan’s election integrity against unfounded claims by President Donald Trump regarding voter fraud. Biden narrowly won Michigan, further spotlighting Benson’s efforts.

Benson’s campaign for governor emphasizes enhanced election security, democracy protection, and public education improvements. Her platform includes reducing family costs, expanding affordable housing, and defending reproductive rights. She enters the general election stage with significant financial and polling lead over Swanson, her primary rival.

Swanson, known for his notable response to protests after George Floyd’s death, was a peacekeeping figure. He joined protesters in Flint, Michigan, gaining positive national attention. In 2024, Swanson spoke at the Democratic National Convention, supporting Biden and Kamala Harris. His campaign for governor commenced in February 2025 at Mott Community College in Flint.

Benson now faces a general election against either Rep. John James or businessman Perry Johnson, who vie for the Republican nomination to potentially gain the governor’s seat.
