Excavation will soon start at a site in Washington, D.C., where the Trump administration plans to build a significant memorial arch. This project currently faces a lawsuit from opponents who argue it will disrupt nearby historic sight lines.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced the construction of the Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck, to be located on Columbia Island between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Burgum described it as a monumental piece of American architecture, honoring Arlington Cemetery’s history and fitting for the nation’s capital.
The images showed a white arch with gold details, topped by the phrase “ONE NATION UNDER GOD.” A gold figure resembling Lady Liberty stands above, accompanied by gold eagles with spread wings.
The project is opposed by three veterans and an architectural historian who argue that congressional approval is required. Nicolas Sansone, an attorney representing the plaintiffs, told the Associated Press they believe construction should not continue, and they are prepared to take legal steps to halt it.
A report from the National Park Service supports the arch idea but acknowledges potential negative effects on historic sight lines. Secretary Burgum defended the project on social media, noting efforts dating back decades. He cited other cities like Athens, London, and Paris that feature arches, pointing out that Washington, D.C., lacks one. Now, according to Burgum, the capital will feature a spectacular arch.
The arch joins several other Trump administration projects, such as renaming the Kennedy Center, creating a new White House ballroom, and refurbishing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
