An explosion occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza in New York City, leading to a fire and significant emergency response on Monday morning. Authorities took one person into custody following the incident at the Lower Manhattan federal building, which accommodates agencies like the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The FDNY reported that four individuals sustained minor injuries that were not life-threatening. Three of these individuals opted out of medical transport, while one was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital. According to a statement made to Newsweek by the FBI, an individual deployed an incendiary device at the location and has since been detained. The FBI’s New York Office is currently investigating the matter.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., the FDNY received a report of an outdoor fire at 26 Federal Plaza, situated between Worth Street and Lafayette Street. Two engine companies and two ladder companies were dispatched to the scene. By 11 a.m., the FDNY confirmed the area had been secured, and no department units remained on site.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed deep concern over the incident via social media, stating, “What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing. I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody.” He affirmed that his team is in contact with the NYPD and pledged cooperation with the federal investigation. The mayor reassured citizens of the city’s commitment to safety and accountability.
Federal authorities confirmed the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is looking into the incident. No serious injuries were reported as officials worked to pinpoint the cause of the explosion.
In a statement shared with Newsweek, Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries commended law enforcement’s prompt action in preventing an attack and apprehending the suspect. He emphasized that acts of terror and violence are unacceptable in New York City, stating, “The individual responsible for this must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
