The Atlanta Falcons are encountering quarterback issues early in the NFL training camp. Tua Tagovailoa, who joined the Falcons this offseason, experienced a ‘flare-up’ of an undisclosed injury, as reported by new head coach Kevin Stefanski. Though Stefanski didn’t provide specific details, ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned that Tagovailoa is dealing with a tight back.

Stefanski expressed optimism about Tagovailoa’s swift return to practice. However, Michael Penix Jr., who competes for the starting position, is still recovering from a torn ACL and may miss the initial four weeks of training camp. To strengthen their lineup, the Falcons have signed veteran backup quarterback Cooper Rush.
The Falcons recently released Trevor Siemian, leaving undrafted rookie free agent Jack Strand as the only fully healthy quarterback on their roster. Although Penix has participated in individual drills and 7-on-7 exercises, he hasn’t yet engaged in full team activities. Penix’s history includes four season-ending injuries during his college career, prompting caution in his return.

Penix told ESPN.
Stefanski acknowledged that unexpected injuries can occur even at the start of training camp. Despite the quarterback challenges, the Falcons are a team to monitor this season. The new leadership, featuring former quarterback Matt Ryan as team president, aims to guide the Falcons back to the playoffs. The team last reached the playoffs in 2017 and hasn’t had a .500 record since then.
