Supporters of the U.S. soccer team celebrated the return of star player Folarin Balogun as he prepared to play in the match against Belgium. This decision came after his controversial red card was suspended. Some Belgian fans, however, were not pleased with this outcome.
Many fans from both sides believed the red card was unfair. However, they criticized FIFA’s handling of the situation, especially influenced by a phone call from President Donald Trump to FIFA’s president.
Outside the Seattle stadium, fans shared their thoughts before the game began:
Oriana Chiu, 32: “As a U.S. fan, I’m happy about it. The decision itself means we should pick one set of rules to follow.”
Sunny Selders, 53: “I feel it is the right decision. It should have been a yellow card, not red. I’m thrilled to watch him play because he deserves to be in this game.”
Oscar Lara, 24: “It’s ridiculous. If you get a red card, you shouldn’t play the next game. Fair rules for everyone.”
Stefan Boehme, 54: “There’s no precedent for this. The FIFA rules clearly state a red card leads to an automatic suspension. Overturning it is outrageous, especially with involvement from the president.”
Joachim Westerlinck, 45: “We agree the card was wrong, but politics should not interfere. We want to beat the best U.S. team, though the manner of his return is not proper.”
Jason Comber and John Chang, both 31:
(Chang): “The call was unfair, so they’re correcting it.”
(Comber): “I agree, but if we win, there’s an asterisk next to our victory.”
