Bob Mackie, renowned for his influential role in fashion and costume design, passed away on Monday at age 87. His official Instagram account confirmed his passing with a heartfelt message. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today,” the post read. “He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do.”
The announcement further stated, “His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
Bob Mackie’s impact on the fashion world is immense. Known for his dazzling and theatrical designs, he defined the looks of many iconic stars. His creations were worn by celebrities including Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner.
Mackie gained prominence initially designing for Mitzi Gaynor. His career soared when he secured a position designing costumes for “The Carol Burnett Show,” remaining an integral part of the series during its 11-season tenure.
Cher’s show-stopping feathered outfit at the 1986 Academy Awards showcases Mackie’s distinctive style. This design, among others, earned him nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for “The Cher Show,” and three Academy Award nominations.
Mackie stated to People magazine, “Nobody was allowed to even design a halter dress until Cher started wearing them on Sonny & Cher in the ‘70s, and then all of a sudden they were in everybody’s collection. And then girls were showing way more skin than they should have, because Cher was showing more skin than she should have. But she looked good in it.”
His work consisted of vibrant elements like sequins, feathers, and beads, setting him apart as one of Hollywood’s leading costume designers. The appeal of Mackie’s designs has spanned generations, as seen in younger stars embracing his past works.
Sabrina Carpenter, a current favorite, frequently wears Mackie’s vintage designs. Notably, at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, she wore a silver-and-white dress originally crafted for Madonna’s 1991 Academy Awards performance.
