A 38-year-old man lost his life on Saturday following a shark attack off Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, Australia. The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. local time, according to police reports. Rottnest Island is situated approximately 19 miles west of Perth.
The victim was transported to shore but did not regain consciousness. A representative from St. John WA Ambulance confirmed the details to People, stating, “A 38-year-old man was in the water at Horseshoe Reef when he was believed to have been bitten by a shark.” Although paramedics met the vessel onshore, attempts to revive the man failed.
The attack took place near a well-known tourist destination on Australia’s western coast. According to authorities, a great white shark was responsible for the tragic event. Footage from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation showed police presence, rescue officers, and a boat at the site of the attack.
This marks the second fatal shark attack in Australia this year. Experts from Perth’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advised the public to exercise “additional caution” in the area, as reported by BBC News. The department also indicated the likely species involved was a great white shark.
Earlier this year, a similar incident occurred when a 12-year-old boy succumbed to injuries a week after a shark attack in Sydney Harbor. On the New South Wales coast, three other individuals experienced non-fatal shark encounters within the same two-day period. An image of a great white shark near the sea floor at Neptune Islands, South Australia, highlights the species’ presence in the region.
