Kim Mathers, 51, from Chesterfield Township, faced jail on Thursday due to numerous violations of her drug and alcohol testing requirements. During a court session, she loudly inquired of her attorney, “How long am I going to be in there?” This occurred shortly after Judge William Hackel revoked her bonds across three cases, citing noncompliance, and agreed to a prosecutor’s request to jail her.
Judge Hackel, of the 42-II District Court in New Baltimore, mentioned Mathers has the option to be released into an in-patient facility. Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Joseph McCarthy emphasized, “You’ve been encouraging her for two months to enter some sort of a treatment program since she picked up her second charge in May.” McCarthy added, “She’s failed to do that.” He highlighted concerns over her repeated violations and stressed the risk she poses to herself and the community, calling for immediate jail remand.
Mathers’ attorney, Camilla Barkovic, argued against the prosecutor’s statements but did not dispute Mathers’ numerous bond violations. Jeremy Stradley from EMS Testing and Freedom Bail Bonds was present to discuss the test results but was not required to testify due to Barkovic’s stipulation.
Outside the courtroom, Barkovic stated, “Kim Mathers is a wonderful young woman, and she’s being victimized by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.” Judge Hackel then revoked two $10,000 bonds and a $5,000 bond, although the violation details remained undisclosed.
Mathers, the former wife of rapper Eminem, has faced legal challenges since February, beginning with a drunk driving arrest. A subsequent drunk driving arrest followed in May, just two days after she pleaded to the first incident. In June, she missed a court hearing, resulting in a bench warrant.
On July 11, Mathers was taken to McLaren Macomb Hospital for a “Hemorrhage/Laceration” and allegedly resisted arrest, kicking a Chesterfield Township police officer. She now faces charges of resisting arrest and resisting arrest causing injury. A probable cause conference for these charges is set for September 3.
On Thursday, Mathers was due for sentencing following a no contest plea on May 11 to charges of operating while impaired and failing to report an accident related to a February 16 hit-and-run. The incident involved her striking a parked vehicle while driving impaired with children in the car. Mathers also faced a pretrial for her second drunk driving offense, where she allegedly hit a vehicle in Chesterfield Township on May 13. As of now, she remains charged with felony drunk driving for her third offense.
