On June 22, 2026, a tragic incident unfolded in Montreal, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a police officer, during a shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. The shooter was also killed during the event. Montreal police have yet to release information regarding the motive behind the attack, which took place in an area known for its kosher restaurants and supermarkets frequented by the city’s Jewish community. This area includes a supermarket, several shops, and a residential building.
Montreal police confirmed the loss in a statement shared on social media, expressing their sadness over the death of their officer who was serving in the line of duty. They also announced the death of a civilian along with the suspect and advised residents to steer clear of the area.
The incident started around 11:30 a.m. ET. An intense police operation followed, with officers gathered at the shooting scene and a police helicopter overhead. Fady Dagher, chief of the Montreal Police Service, reported uncertainty about the civilian’s identity or any connection to the Jewish community. He also lacked information on whether the civilian’s death resulted from police actions.
In addition to the fatalities, another officer was seriously injured during the incident. Chief Dagher offered support to the injured officer in a conference later that day, emphasizing community solidarity.
The police officer who died was not named immediately. Chief Dagher described him as an excellent officer deeply committed to his role. This marks the first loss of an SPVM officer in a duty-related incident since 2002.
Dagher reassured the public, stating there was no ongoing threat and the area was secure. He acknowledged the lack of details surrounding the shooter or any potential ambush tactics used against the officers.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is closely watching the situation, urging vigilance among community members while awaiting further information.
Quebec Premier Christine Frechette expressed her disturbance over the events, stressing the importance of allowing authorities to conduct their investigations fully and discouraging speculation.
