Authorities believe two ransom notes sent to Nancy Guthrie’s family were likely penned by her abductors. Investigators suggest both notes originated from the same computer. The first note demanded millions in bitcoin for Guthrie’s release, while the second note claimed Guthrie had died, stating her death was inadvertent.
Her daughter, ‘Today’ show co-host Savannah Guthrie, stated in a March NBC interview that the family considers the notes authentic. ‘There are a lot of different notes that came,’ she said. ‘I think most of them are not real, but I believe the two notes that we received, that we responded to, are real.’
The first note, sent on February 2, a day after Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing from Tucson, Arizona, was addressed to local news outlets and TMZ via online tiplines. It included specific details, such as the presence of an Apple Watch with a white band on her bedroom floor and a broken back porch light.
The second note, sent on February 6, resembled the first in language and style but omitted any demands. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings addressed the kidnappers in an Instagram video. ‘We received your message and we understand,’ Savannah Guthrie said. ‘We beg you now to return our mother to us, so that we can celebrate with her. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.’
A task force comprising FBI agents and Pima County detectives continues to pursue Nancy Guthrie’s case.
