The recent Senate hearing featured Dr. Anthony Fauci’s diary, shedding light on his perspective during the COVID-19 pandemic. This diary played a role in the ongoing scrutiny by Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, who accused Fauci of misleading the public about the virus’s origins. Fauci, the former head of infectious diseases at the National Institutes of Health, invoked the Fifth Amendment multiple times, choosing not to respond to numerous questions during the hearing.
Revelations from Fauci’s Diary
Paul brought public focus to the proceedings by sharing over 1,000 pages from Fauci’s diary, accessed from government files. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s agency provided these to the committee. Excerpts from Fauci’s writings support Paul’s argument that Fauci’s private words sometimes differed from his public statements.
An entry from January 26, 2020, addressed whether early infections were linked to a Chinese market:
“Using epidemiological and genomic data, the first infection occurred in early December, unrelated to the market. The virus had already spread among people before the Chinese acknowledged the new infection, allowing the virus to establish sustained spread. Early reports claimed there was no human-to-human transmission, focusing on the market cases. The market served as an amplifier. However, the virus initially jumped from animals to humans elsewhere.”
Fauci’s public comments later mirrored this language, acknowledging the market’s role as an amplifier rather than the origin. Some scientists considered a lab leak plausible. While definitive proof is lacking, many experts support the natural origins theory, like with SARS.
Inside Fauci’s Relationship with Trump
Fauci documented interactions with President Trump, who initially praised but later criticized him. Fauci’s diary provides a window into these dynamics.
On March 11, 2020, Fauci wrote:
“We presented to the President. He asked many insightful questions, showing more concern for public health than the economy, believing the latter would recover.”
By August 4, 2020, frustrations grew in a meeting where Trump criticized Fauci and others:
“Trump was upset over increased case numbers, thinking they were due to more testing. I explained more tests detect cases we might miss otherwise. But rising positivity rates, hospitalizations, and deaths indicated truly more cases.”
Media Attention and Celebrity Status
Fauci’s diary also captures his rising media attention and celebrity status. For example, on May 13, 2020, he reflected on an Instagram discussion with actress Julia Roberts organized by the ONE Campaign:
“Julia Roberts was thrilled to speak with me, calling me her hero. We talked about COVID-19’s impact on developing countries and the moral responsibility to help them. If not addressed, outbreaks there could threaten global health. We also discussed involving these regions in vaccine trials.”
Trump’s COVID-19 Illness
Fauci also recounted President Trump’s COVID-19 battle in his diary. He detailed a call from Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during Trump’s illness:
“On October 4, 2020, Meadows called to discuss when the President could be seen publicly. According to CDC rules, 10 days after symptoms start, which for Trump was October 10. Meadows detailed Trump’s condition, including a high fever and low oxygen levels, prompting Remdesivir treatment. By Sunday, Trump felt better.”
