Amid Lane Kiffin’s departure from Ole Miss to LSU, the atmosphere in college athletics has been anything but ordinary. With the integration of former NFL players into college football and legislative discussions on coach restrictions, the landscape feels surreal.
Walker Jones, head of Ole Miss’ NIL collective, shared insights on the “Assorted Crackers” podcast about Kiffin’s transition. During the podcast, Jones mentioned that the FBI was involved in checking Ole Miss’ football facilities for bugs. “We actually had the FBI come through and walk the building for bugs and everything,” he stated, indicating a concern for Baton Rouge’s operations.
“I remember getting on my knees and looking underneath the desk, like checking for, ‘Is there some sort of bug in my office?'” Jones described.
The search wasn’t exactly a full-blown federal operation. Still, head coach Pete Golding did not completely dismiss the FBI’s role. While answering questions, Golding clarified the situation, saying, “Any bowl game or playoff system, you increase security. There wasn’t a formal hiring of the FBI. Likely, a current player’s parent with FBI connections was involved, rather than an organized sweep.”
With Kiffin migrating to LSU and coaches shuffling between locations, the need for heightened security was apparent. Concerns about unauthorized access to video footage and team materials added to the urgency for protective measures. Kiffin’s strategy included recruiting key players like Kewan Lacy and Trinidad Chambliss following Ole Miss’ season.
