Federal prosecutors have taken action against a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer, charging him with making false statements to investigators. This charge stems from a January incident where the officer allegedly shot a Venezuelan man during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
Christian Castro, the officer in question, is accused of shooting Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis in the leg. The charges against Castro arose after evidence, including video footage, contradicted his initial account of the incident.
This case is part of a broader investigation, resulting in prosecutors dropping all charges against Sosa-Celis. There are also ongoing debates within the Department of Justice (DOJ) about the possibility of additional civil rights charges being filed.
