Federal Investigation Launched After Fatal Atlanta Train Stabbing

A 66-year-old great-grandmother, Margaret Swan, was killed in a random stabbing on an Atlanta train. John Elijah Matthews is accused of the attack and faces federal charges for the violence that led to her death.

This incident prompted her family to question MARTA’s safety measures and urge for improved security on public transit.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a federal probe into MARTA’s safety standards, noting high rates of violent incidents compared to the national average. Duffy highlighted an over threefold increase in assaults, robberies, and rapes on MARTA trains.

“I want ANSWERS from Atlanta,” Duffy wrote, emphasizing the urgency for accountability.

The investigation includes an audit of MARTA’s safety protocols and their effectiveness in preventing violence against both passengers and workers. The FTA will scrutinize how MARTA uses funds intended for security enhancements.

In the tragic incident, surveillance footage shows Matthews allegedly attacking Swan in a train car. He boarded the train minutes after Swan and, according to an affidavit, initiated the attack by cutting her throat and stabbing her repeatedly.

Witnesses fled and called for help, while video footage confirmed that Swan had no prior interaction with her attacker.

MARTA police detained Matthews shortly after the incident. He was found with a bloody knife and blood on his clothing.

Authorities are evaluating whether to pursue the death penalty if Matthews is convicted. Meanwhile, this case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of the MARTA transit system.
