EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — FIFA launched an investigation on Monday following an altercation during Spain’s celebrations after defeating Argentina in the World Cup final. The incident unfolded on the field as players engaged in a brief skirmish.
Video footage revealed the involvement of several players, including Argentina’s midfielder, Leandro Paredes. Paredes was seen shoving Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. When Spain’s substitute, Gavi, attempted to intervene, Paredes pushed him to the ground.
Spain’s captain, Rodri, appeared to be struck in the stomach by Argentina’s defender, Nahuel Molina, as he joined his teammates in celebrating the victory. Molina later confronted Rodri, who faced a verbal exchange with his former Manchester City teammate, Nicolas Otamendi.
Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, along with other players, intervened to diffuse the tension on the field.
FIFA issued a statement confirming that its disciplinary committee has assigned a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine possible violations of the FIFA disciplinary code concerning the altercation. The statement did not specify a timeline for the investigation or mention Paredes by name. Although Paredes did not receive a red card after the match, he may face suspension.
Spain needed extra time to secure the 1-0 victory in Sunday’s final, as Argentina was down to 10 players. Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card in stoppage time.
In an unusual gesture of defiance, Argentina’s players faced their fans with their backs to the podium as Spain’s team lifted the trophy. This came after Spain had honored Argentina with a guard of honor during the medal presentation.
