FIFA has made a rare decision to allow a player to appear in a game despite being suspended due to a red card. This is the first time since 1962 that such a reversal has occurred. President Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the suspension of the U.S. team’s leading goal scorer, Folarin Balogun. Balogun received a red card in a recent match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On Sunday, FIFA announced that Balogun would be eligible to play in the upcoming game against Belgium despite his suspension. This decision aligns with Article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, which can suspend a match suspension for a probationary period of one year. If Balogun commits a similar offense during this time, the suspension will be enforced.
President Trump expressed his gratitude to FIFA through a post on Truth Social, thanking them for reversing what he considered a great injustice. However, he did not mention his involvement in the decision or claim credit for it.
The suspension reversal is advantageous to the U.S. team, as Balogun is a key offensive player. This situation is reminiscent of past instances where FIFA has faced scrutiny for altering rules that appear to benefit certain players or teams. One example includes Cristiano Ronaldo being cleared to play at the World Cup despite a red card that should have sidelined him for two games.
Reporters Tyler Pager and Tariq Panja have covered the issue, focusing on the intersection of politics and sports.
