Firefighter Fatality in Colorado Highlights Ongoing Western US Wildfires

Amid dry, windy conditions, a major wildfire near Sisters, a central Oregon town, challenges firefighting efforts. A fourth firefighter, Nathan Matthews, 43, from Lincoln, Nebraska, succumbed to injuries sustained in a wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border a month prior, according to the federal Interior Department.

Multiple significant wildfires continue to burn across the western US. The blaze near Sisters, with winds gusting up to 30 mph (50 kph), remains a top priority. Firefighters have made progress, and officials remain hopeful that calmer winds on Sunday will stabilize the fire’s perimeter.

“It’s going to take a while to put it out entirely. But as long as it stops moving, I think that’ll get people to relax a little bit,” said Sisters Mayor Jennifer Letz.

As of Saturday, the fire, sparked by lightning, had burned approximately 40 square miles (105 square kilometers) and was 5% contained. Around 30 evacuees from north of Sisters have taken shelter at the local high school, while others stay in recreational vehicles nearby. Despite the fire, the city remains safe, with business continuing as usual.

The wildfires are exacerbated by prolonged dry periods, record low snow levels in some regions, heatwaves, and erratic winds, affecting states like Oregon, Washington, California, and Colorado. In Canada, 926 fires were active on Saturday, with 82 out of control, according to Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. About 300 aircraft and 5,300 personnel are engaged in firefighting efforts, including 133 fires in northwestern Ontario alone, where the largest had spread over an area of 1,200 square miles (3,200 square kilometers).

The deceased firefighter was part of a group that had deployed emergency shelters to protect themselves when flames closed in on June 27. Emily Barker, 38, Nick Hutcherson, 27, and Sydney Watson, 26, died at the scene. They belonged to a Helitack crew that was deployed in Mesa County, Colorado, to tackle emerging fires. Matthews and another firefighter were hospitalized afterward.

Watson, Hutcherson, and Barker were commemorated at a memorial service earlier this month. Arrangements for Matthews’ memorial are pending.
