Firefighters in southwestern France have managed to keep a large wildfire contained within its boundaries, enabling about 198,000 residents to return home. This evacuation might be the largest peacetime evacuation in France. However, new fires are causing evacuations in other parts of France and Greece.
In the Mediterranean Var, a fire that was thought to be under control advanced rapidly, consuming 4 square miles in just six hours. These events highlight the unpredictability of firefighting efforts, as progress can quickly reverse.
At the height of these fires, over 300,000 people in France and Spain were forced to leave their homes and vacation spots. Emergency services were stretched thin across multiple crises.
The Copernicus climate service says Europe is warming more than twice the global average since the 1980s. Rising temperatures and prolonged droughts dry out vegetation, making fires more intense and faster spreading.
Cap Ferret Evacuation
The Gironde fire, west of Bordeaux, has burned approximately 162 square miles, an area four times the size of Paris. Firefighters have contained it within this perimeter but have not declared it “fixed.” Active sectors and underground hot spots remain, posing ongoing threats.
Many communities remained deserted. Authorities have kept the Cap Ferret peninsula mostly evacuated due to nearby hot spots.
Firefighters are using tactical burns to manage the situation.
The fire’s toll affects people and wildlife. According to Allain Bougrain-Dubourg, president of France’s League for the Protection of Birds, millions of animals have been impacted.
Southern France Fires
In the Var, lines around the Gros Bessillon fire held, but 2,500 people have not returned home. Around 1,300 firefighters continue battling the blaze.
Simon Babre, the Var Prefect, expressed disbelief at the fire’s resurgence. Twenty French departments are under an orange heat warning.
Fires in Greece
In Greece, efforts to protect Porto Germeno, a popular resort, continue as gale-force winds fuel flames. The fire began near Agios Vasileios, resulting in the sea evacuation of about 300 people. Further evacuation orders have been issued.
Thick pine forests around Porto Germeno have been ravaged, with residents describing the destruction. Nearly 500 firefighters, including international crews, are on the scene supported by aircraft.
Minister Evangelos Tournas reports that strong winds are complicating firefighting efforts, preventing some aircraft from effective water drops.
