Severe Flooding in Nepal and China

Nepal authorities have issued warnings about potential further flooding due to heavy rainfall. In China, the full scale of the disaster in the Tibet region is coming to light. Five days ago, a glacier collapse caused destructive floodwaters, covering areas in thick mud. Rescuers in Nepal face challenges accessing affected areas as the scale of destruction becomes apparent.

The disaster here is overwhelming, said Ferrin Cole, operations director with Crisis Response International.

The flood wiped out communities swiftly. Efforts are underway to provide necessary aid quickly.

The State Department reported about 100 Americans missing across Nepal and China’s Tibet region. Divya Chandrashekar, whose family member is missing in Nepal, expressed hope of finding her loved ones safe.

Nepal’s disaster agency confirmed the death toll has reached 781, with over 2,500 people still unaccounted for, including 592 foreign nationals. The Nepal Tourism Board has rescued 289 foreign nationals.

In Tibet, China reported 16 deaths and 546 missing, among them 261 foreign nationals. It is unclear how many missing persons are included in both Nepal and China reports.

NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to study stars and galaxies, providing insights into dark energy and dark matter. It lifted off smoothly from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

After launch, the telescope began its mission to orbit the sun-Earth Lagrange point, a balance point 1 million miles from Earth. Compared to the Hubble Telescope, the Roman observatory is set to enhance understanding of the universe.
