U.S. military forces conducted a strike on Iranian launchers Sunday, targeting two units observed preparing to launch rockets equipped with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. This was confirmed by U.S. Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), in a communication to Newsweek.
The launchers located on Larak Island were identified as part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Captain Hawkins stated, “Last week, CENTCOM accomplished the task of clearing sea mines from the strait’s international shipping lanes. U.S. forces continue to monitor the area vigilantly, ready to ensure the free flow of commerce through this vital waterway.”
This military action follows a period of ceasefire between the nations and has led to renewed threats of retaliation from Tehran. According to Reuters, as cited by Iranian state media, the attack resulted in casualties among soldiers and civilians, but specific figures were not released immediately.
“There will be a ‘response and punishment’ from Tehran,” Reuters reported, referencing Iranian state sources.
