Florida’s Lieutenant Governor, Jay Collins, has expressed support for the state’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, in launching an investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci. Collins stated that the matter should be resolved legally, emphasizing, “Let’s get this in the court of law.” He commended Uthmeier for taking the lead on this issue.
Fauci recently appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. During the session, he frequently cited his Fifth Amendment right, refraining from answering questions posed by the committee led by Chairman Rand Paul, a Republican from Kentucky. In his opening remarks, Fauci mentioned he was heeding legal counsel.
Uthmeier took to social media, expressing disbelief over Fauci’s congressional testimony. He announced an investigation into Fauci, stating the need to uncover the truth regarding COVID-19. Fauci’s attorney, David Schertler, has declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
Uthmeier aims to determine whether Fauci might have breached any state laws. A statement provided to the press revealed that investigators would examine Fauci’s knowledge during the pandemic, potential public misinformation, and any harm caused to Floridians. The inquiry will also determine if Fauci could be liable under Florida law.
This investigation is part of the ongoing conflict concerning the federal government’s COVID-19 response. Fauci, previously the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, gained prominence during the pandemic. He also faced criticism from Republicans over COVID-19 guidelines, including mask mandates and questions about the virus’s origins.
Recently, over 1,000 pages of Fauci’s pandemic-era diaries were released, sparking concerns about public messaging. Uthmeier announced the state-level investigation following Fauci’s refusal to answer questions, a move criticized by GOP lawmakers.
The controversy has rekindled discussions around President Joe Biden’s pardon of Fauci, covering potential federal offenses until January 19, 2025. Legal experts point out that presidential pardons apply solely to federal crimes, leaving the door open for state investigations.
Collins, who is running to succeed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, supports Uthmeier’s investigation as part of a broader accountability effort. “The people deserve accountability,” Collins asserted, referencing the lives altered and businesses lost during the pandemic. He highlighted the state’s successful economic and educational outcomes.
Collins frequently mentioned Fauci’s use of the Fifth Amendment as a reason for continued scrutiny of the federal response. He criticized various public health measures during the pandemic, including mask recommendations and restaurant seating restrictions.
As an Army Special Forces veteran and amputee, Collins shared his personal struggles with accessing veterans’ care due to his opposition to the COVID-19 vaccine. He argued that school closures and social restrictions had lasting impacts on children, businesses, and mental health.
The future of Uthmeier’s investigation is uncertain. Concurrently, Paul hinted at potential further actions by the Senate committee, including contempt proceedings against Fauci.
Fauci has steadfastly defended his pandemic response, stating that his guidance was informed by available scientific data. He denies allegations that he deliberately misled either the public or Congress.
