Former Representative Mike Rogers, a Republican Senate candidate from Michigan backed by President Donald Trump, highlighted the financial challenges faced by American families. He emphasized the need for a quick resolution to the war with Iran and suggested a diesel export embargo until the conflict ends.
In a social media video, Rogers stated, “Michigan families are struggling with the price of everyday life. Groceries cost too much. We have to bring prices down. The war with Iran needs to end, and end quickly. When it does, energy costs will plummet. But Michigan families can’t afford to wait for that to happen.”
He previously proposed suspending the state and federal gas tax, totaling 70 cents per gallon. The state’s motor fuel tax on both gas and diesel is 52.4 cents per gallon. Federal taxes include excise taxes of 18.3 cents per gallon on gasoline, 24.3 cents per gallon on diesel fuel, and a 0.1 cent per gallon fee for the Leaking Underground Storage Tank.
Amid growing election anxieties, Rogers did not call for a federal diesel tax suspension but advocated for a diesel export embargo. “Diesel fuels the trucks that bring groceries to this store. It fuels the tractors that grow our food. And when diesel costs more, it costs more to grow it, ship it, stock it, and ultimately, buy it. So until this war is over, I’m calling for a temporary embargo on American diesel exports,” Rogers stated.
Trump has endorsed Rogers, expressing full support in a recent social media video.
The national average price for diesel reached a record high of $6.5276 as of September 22, according to AAA.
Rogers is competing against Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. In response to Rogers’ video, El-Sayed accused his opponent of prolonging the war in Iran in a social media post, calling Rogers a “liar, coward, fraud.” Former Representative Justin Amash, who finished second in the 2024 GOP Michigan Senate primary, criticized Rogers, suggesting his sudden call for the war’s end indicates a failing campaign.
Fox News Digital contacted Rogers’ campaign for comments. Despite the close race, Rogers lost the 2024 U.S. Senate general election to then-Representative Elissa Slotkin.
