The recent killing of four immigrant workers in southern Italy has exposed serious issues of labor abuse linked to criminal networks. These men, who were fruit pickers, died in a van set ablaze in Calabria. Italian authorities believe this crime is related to labor trafficking activities.
The disturbing event took place at a gas station and was captured by surveillance cameras. This footage, showing two individuals pouring fuel on the van and trapping the passengers inside, has shocked the nation and caught the attention of high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Mohammad Taj Alamyar, a 35-year-old originally from Afghanistan and the only survivor, recalled the harrowing incident. According to Alamyar, he and four other workers from Afghanistan and Pakistan were employed in local strawberry fields. They were attacked after confronting their handlers about unpaid wages while being driven from the farm.
Alamyar identified the attackers as Pakistani drug traffickers, allegedly connected to Italian organized crime. Despite severe injuries, he escaped the burning van and shared his story with Italian media. His testimony highlights the severe consequences of criminal involvement in the agricultural sector.
Prime Minister Meloni responded on social media, promising that Italy would fight back against such violence and oppression. She stressed the importance of thoroughly investigating the crime and ensuring justice for those involved.
