Mistreatment Allegations at ICE Detention Facility

A report from the Department of Homeland Security’s internal watchdog highlighted cases of mistreatment at the Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana. Officers reportedly put one detainee in a chokehold and stabbed another with a pen.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General compiled the report. It offers a detailed view of conditions inside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility. The report revealed violations of federal standards on the use of physical force by staff members and noted that the facility refused to provide complete video footage of some violent incidents.

This report is part of a broader audit by the inspector general’s office examining ICE’s roughly 200 detention centers. The scrutiny comes as ICE’s treatment of detainees faces increasing criticism.

Under President Trump’s administration, the number of detainees at ICE facilities increased due to immigration enforcement policies. These centers serve as holding facilities for individuals awaiting immigration court hearings or those ordered to be removed from the U.S. Many are operated by private companies.

Recently, protests erupted outside a Newark facility. Demonstrators clashed with law enforcement in response to reports of a hunger strike by detainees due to rotten food and inadequate medical care.

Detainees across the country have reported being denied showers, forced to sleep tightly packed on bare floors, and being left without necessary medications for chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.
