In the seaside village of Mumbles, Wales, hundreds of fans gathered to pay respects to Bonnier Tyler. The beloved Welsh pop star, who gained international fame for her 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in Portugal at the age of 75.
Tyler was hospitalized in May in Faro, a place where she had a residence, undergoing emergency intestinal surgery. Upon her passing, the hearse carrying her coffin, adorned with a Welsh flag, was met by locals and fans from the UK and other countries as it made its way through the streets. Tributes poured in, with many gathering outside her former home to leave floral offerings.
“She was always coming home and making sure that she came back to her fans in Wales,” remarked Carys Edwards, a local mourner. “Her songs really did touch a lot of people here in Wales; we loved her a lot.”
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler came from humble beginnings as the daughter of a coal miner. Raised with three sisters and two brothers, she became a pop sensation, earning three Grammy nominations. In 2013, she represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing in 19th place. Recognized for her music contributions, she was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2022, largely due to the success of “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” This ballad achieved chart-topping status in both Britain and the United States and amassed over one billion streams.
Beyond her most famous song, Tyler’s other popular hits included “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” featured in the “Footloose” film soundtrack. A private memorial service for Tyler’s family and friends will occur at a Swansea church on Monday. Following the service, Tyler’s body will proceed on a final tour through her hometown of Skewen.
