Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has selected Kyler Murray as the starting quarterback, overtaking J.J. McCarthy, the team’s 2024 first-round pick. Reports suggest that the decision wasn’t solely based on training camp performances between Murray and McCarthy.
A report from CBS Sports highlighted concerns within the Vikings organization about McCarthy’s unpredictability. These concerns stem from his absence due to a knee injury throughout his rookie year and inconsistent performances in 2025.
McCarthy’s preseason effort against the New York Giants on August 15, 2024, saw him manage merely 57.6% pass completions, alongside 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions over 10 games. During this period, Minnesota’s record stood at 6-4, indicating significant room for improvement at the quarterback position.
A franchise’s success often relies on a stable quarterback role, according to a source familiar with the situation. The issue with McCarthy was uncertainty about which version of him would take the field. Being young, McCarthy might not yet grasp the demands of consistency and commitment required for his role.
Murray, previously the No. 1 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals, became available after experiencing a turbulent journey with them. Upon acquiring him, the Vikings immediately declared him as the starter for their opening preseason game against the New York Giants.
As McCarthy enters his third year, he now takes on the backup role. One defensive coach stated that McCarthy possesses talent but needs to focus on managing games without exceeding his responsibilities. This progression could open future opportunities for him, either with the Vikings or another franchise.
The question remains whether McCarthy should seek prospects with another team. The Vikings’ current GM, Nolan Teasley, wasn’t involved in McCarthy’s initial selection, as Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who was let go last offseason, drafted him.
Injuries have hindered McCarthy’s progression, but glimpses of strong quarterback play have surfaced, demonstrating potential despite a struggling quarterback rating among his peers with significant pass attempts.
At 23 years old, McCarthy still has an opportunity for growth and development. He must prove himself further, especially since Murray’s reputation and trust with O’Connell take precedence.
O’Connell has shown success in turning around quarterback careers, much like with Sam Darnold in 2024, who rebounded to secure a Super Bowl win with the Seattle Seahawks. Vikings fans may hope for similar results with Murray, while McCarthy waits for a chance to showcase his capabilities.
During a preseason game against the Giants, McCarthy completed four of seven passes for 34 yards and was sacked once. Carson Wentz, also competing for the backup spot, completed six of eleven passes for 56 yards, including a touchdown to Myles Price. Murray opened the game, completing two of three passes and a critical third-and-seven pass to sustain a scoring drive.
