France and Spain Battle Raging Wildfires Prompting Mass Evacuations

On July 25, 2026, wildfires swept through Southern Europe, impacting France and Spain significantly. These fires have caused the evacuation of over 250,000 people, with 70,000 evacuating from central Spain alone. Tragically, a man lost his life in the town of Manises, according to local reports.

In France, the military deployed an A400M cargo plane to disperse flame retardants over the burning forests in the southwest. The fires threaten regions like Bordeaux, known for its winemaking. With emergency services stretched thin, organizers of the Tour de France shortened the race’s last stage to redeploy security personnel to fire-affected areas. The revamped race will start in Paris, reducing the route from 82.5 miles to 55 miles.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the ongoing battle as ‘long and very difficult’ while authorities took preventive measures like trench digging and applying fire retardants.

Authorities warned that shifting winds could push the fires closer to Bordeaux. While teams made progress overnight, they cautioned that the fires remain unpredictable. Military and emergency services are on high alert. Additional measures include deploying soldiers and distributing 1.5 million masks to shield against harmful smoke. Residents between the fires and Bordeaux, including parts of the city’s suburbs, received evacuation orders.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu noted the unprecedented nature of these fires. As the flames generated their own winds, additional soldiers and equipment were dispatched. Bordeaux has opened its exhibition center to provide shelter for evacuees, potentially housing up to 10,000 people.

The magnitude of these blazes has surprised many. The A400M and 18 other aircraft and helicopters are actively combating fires in Gironde. The fires have already destroyed roughly 140 homes in the area. Authorities attributed the fires’ severity to extreme weather conditions exacerbated by climate change.

Meanwhile, Spain has mobilized 2,600 personnel and 19 aircraft to tackle major fires near Madrid. Spain records 130,000 hectares of forest fires this year, as compared to an annual average of 100,000 hectares over the past decade.

Numerous European countries including Italy, Greece, and Germany, are aiding France and Spain with water-dumping aircraft. This international cooperation aims to control the ferocious blazes threatening communities across Southern Europe.
