France Experiences High Excess Deaths During Summer Heat Wave

France has reported over 5,700 excess deaths due to a historic summer heat wave, according to Public Health France. This marks the country’s highest heat-related death toll in more than twenty years.

Between June 17 and July 2, there were 21,674 recorded deaths, as opposed to the expected 15,910, resulting in 5,764 excess deaths. These figures translate to a 36% increase compared to predictions.

Temperatures soared above 104 degrees Fahrenheit in several regions of the country during the heat wave. Public Health France emphasized the uniqueness of this event, highlighting its early onset, severity, and duration.

This unprecedented event, characterized by its early onset, intensity, and duration, exposed almost the entire population to extreme heat during a period that was still largely dedicated to school and work activities.

The heat wave led to an increase in deaths across hospitals, private homes, and nursing homes. Public Health France’s analysis shows a rise in mortality for people aged 15 and older, with a noticeable increase beginning at age 45. Individuals aged 75 and older accounted for about two-thirds of the excess deaths, totaling at least 3,719.

The Paris region experienced the highest impact, with 1,999 excess deaths, indicating an increase of over 80% from expected figures. Public Health France noted that the 2026 heat wave produced the highest excess mortality rate since the 2003 heat wave. The National Institute of Health and Medical Research estimates that around 15,000 more deaths occurred compared to usual mortality rates for this time of year.

During this year, the most intense heat occurred on June 24 and June 25, with national average temperatures reaching 86 degrees Fahrenheit. In many areas, temperatures exceeded 104 degrees. Over half of the excess deaths, approximately 56%, took place during the heat wave’s peak from June 25 to June 27.

More than 10,000 excess deaths were reported across Europe at the peak of the heat wave, though preliminary numbers may change as updates emerge. In Paris, funeral directors faced a surge in burials and cremations, leading to full mortuaries denying new arrivals.

Public Health France noted that the excess mortality estimates account for all cause deaths during the heat wave. Thus far, the figures are provisional and may undergo refinement.
