U.S. Marine veteran Robert Gilman is back in the United States after spending over 1,660 days in a Russian prison. Now in a military hospital in Texas, he will undergo medical and psychological treatment. His wrongful detention has taken a significant toll on his health.
Kieran Ramsey, speaking for the Gilman family, shared alarming details on “America’s Newsroom” about Gilman’s condition. “He’s very frail,” Ramsey stated. Recent photos released by the White House show the extent of Gilman’s deterioration.
Gilman was arrested in 2022 in Russia, accused of assaulting a police officer, a charge widely disputed. During his captivity, he endured severe physical abuse, forced medication, and mental torment. Unable to walk unaided, Gilman faces a long road to recovery, needing extensive medical, mental, and dental care.
Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey criticized Russia for its treatment of Gilman, echoing concerns over the severity of his condition. He highlighted a pattern of Americans, especially former Marines, being targeted and falsely charged in Russia.
Gilman traveled to Russia while heading to Moldova, where his health rapidly declined, leading to his arrest. Ramsey emphasized that Gilman’s situation reflects a broader issue, citing cases of other former Marines like Trevor Reed and Paul Whelan who faced similar fates. Ramsey’s firm represents several Americans still held in Russia.
He urged action to bring these detained Americans home. Ramsey acknowledged former President Donald Trump’s role in Gilman’s release, expressing hope for continued efforts from Trump and special envoy Steve Witkoff to secure the freedom of others still in captivity abroad.
