From Fashion Week Prep to Cancer Battle: Alison McCullough’s Journey

Alison McCullough’s Unexpected Discovery

Alison McCullough, a promising model preparing for New York Fashion Week in 2025, found a lump under her arm. Feeling healthy and fit, she immediately sensed something was amiss. McCullough, then 39, sought medical attention but faced obstacles. She was turned away for a routine mammogram due to not meeting the recommended age of 40, delaying her diagnosis.

A Challenging Diagnosis

After months of waiting, McCullough received news she dreaded: triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive type without common hormonal receptors. Dr. Erica Mayer of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute explains that treatment depends on tumor receptor status, which McCullough’s type lacks, limiting her options mostly to traditional therapies.

Navigating Treatment Delays

Despite efforts to start chemotherapy, local facilities in Alaska couldn’t accommodate her promptly. Fearing further delays, McCullough explored alternative routes. City of Hope’s Phoenix office responded swiftly, offering comprehensive care within days of her inquiry.

Pushing Through Chemotherapy

The chemotherapy regimen began almost immediately at City of Hope. McCullough endured six months of treatment, divided into two phases, experiencing minimal side effects initially. As the treatment progressed, it slowed her physically.

A Milestone: Cancer-Free

Completion of chemotherapy in March was a significant victory. To ensure cancer wouldn’t return, doctors advised a double mastectomy, which she underwent successfully in April. In May, her oncologist confirmed the cancer was gone, allowing her to start reconstructive surgery.

Life After Cancer

In June, she returned to Alaska, prioritizing family time. McCullough remains determined to regain her physical strength and plans to share her story through fashion. Her journey of survival provides hope to others facing similar battles.
